Tips: 5 Reasons to have an Engagement Shoot

Having an engagement shoot when you are busy planning a wedding might not be at the top of your priority list or may even seem like a daunting experience.  I wanted to put together my thoughts on why you definitely SHOULD have one and hopefully convince you to change your mind and book that shoot!

1. We get to know each other before the big day...

For me, this is the most important one! The majority of my couples book me for full day coverage on their wedding day - that’s a lot of time we’ll spend together on what is likely to be one of the most important days of your lives. Spending a couple of hours getting you some awesome photos (and starting it off with a coffee/beer) is the perfect opportunity for us to get to know each other ahead of your wedding.

2. It will help calm any nerves about being photographed...

Let's face it...the prospect of being photographed all day can be a scary one! An engagement shoot will get you used to being snapped and help you to relax in front of the camera. Look at is as a practice run! This will mean that the limited time we'll have on your wedding day to get some gorgeous portraits will feel like second nature to you and will make the most of the time we have.

3. It helps me get to know your best angles...

Being able to photograph you before the big day is an invaluable insight for me on how you are as a couple and get to know how you photograph. I promise I won't force you into a bunch of awkward poses, but instead will guide you on what looks good in a photo. This is also a great opportunity for you to give me feedback ahead of your wedding and tell me what you loved and if there was anything you would prefer we avoid doing on the day. Less kissing photos? Sure! MORE kissing photos? AWESOME!

4. You get some lovely photos...

Perhaps an obvious one, but you'll get some awesome photos of the two of you! You could use these for Save the Dates, your wedding website, or just get your favourites printed and displayed proudly on your wall. An engagement shoot will last no longer than two hours (much more time than we’ll have on your wedding) and afterwards, I'll pick out the best ones - normally around 40 - edit them in a mixture of colour and black + white, and upload them for you on an online password-protected gallery for you to download, print and share. You can even order fine art prints straight from your gallery to save any faffing about!

5. It will be FUN!

Ahead of your shoot, we'll have a chat about where to meet and what we'll do. It can be as simple or as crazy as you want! I’m a huge fan of portraits outdoors, so perhaps there is somewhere that means something personal to the two of you, or a hobby you both share. Whatever you decide on, the best photos will come from a place or a theme that reflect who you are and is something you'll enjoy doing...and essentially I'll just tag along to document you both having an awesome time.
